Glacial retreat and snow cover change

Although a key climate change impact globally, glacial retreat and snow cover change is not a widespread issue in Te Moananui Oceania, because the region is characterised by tropical and subtropical climates. Glaciers are found in Aotearoa New Zealand however, and both Aotearoa New Zealand and occasionally Papua New Guinea in the high lands experience some snow. Rising temperatures cause glaciers to retreat, leading to reduced snow cover and ice loss. This impacts local ecosystems, water availablity, and energy security because some hydroelectricity generation is reliant on glacier-fed rivers. The following nature-based solutions may be useful to reduce or address glacial retreat and snow cover change.

Planting for biodiversity
Revegetation / renaturing
Riparian restoration
